Lowlights Vs Highlights

All women desire to have beautiful hair, which will make them stand out from the rest. That's why we find so many women investing their time and money in beatification of their crowning glory. These days, women have the option of going in for any of the various hair color ideas such as lowlights or highlights or a combination of both, to experiment with their locks and add that dramatic touch to their personality. However, before going in for any of such hair coloring techniques, women should know exactly what these mean and what they will do to their hair. Scroll down to know about lowlights vs highlights...

Hair Lowlights Vs Highlights

What are Highlights?
Both hair highlights and lowlights are techniques of streaking the hair. Highlights refer to the process of coloring the hair in two shades lighter than the natural or overall hair color. For example, for women who have brown hair, highlights of caramel or blond color are usually given. For women with black hair, highlights of dark brown or red tones are opted for.

Hair highlights help in giving the entire hair more light and depth. Women who prefer a sun kissed, dramatic look on their hair, should go in for hair highlighting.

What are Lowlights?
On the other hand, lowlights is a hair coloring technique wherein some of the strands of hair are colored in two shades darker than the original hair color. For example, women with black hair are given eggplant colored lowlights. Thus, the main difference between lowlights and highlights is that in highlights, two shades lighter hair color is used for streaking while in lowlights two shades darker hair color is used.

Lowlights for hair are preferred by women who want to jazz up their hair a bit, but still do not want them to look over dramatic. Hair lowlights add depth to the existing hair color and are very good at hiding gray hair. They make a woman look classy, graceful yet trendy, all at once!

Placement of Lowlights and Highlights
When it comes to lowlights vs highlights placements, there is not much difference. Mostly, hair stylists recommend placing either of these on top of the head or around the face. They also recommend to go in for getting thin strands colored rather than opting for thick and chunky hair streaks. You may read more on hair coloring and highlighting ideas. As for lowlights, hair stylists are of the view to get them done on the lower layers of the hair as it helps in lending the illusion of thick hair with a lot of depth!

Combination of Lowlights and Highlights
These days, a hair streaking trend that is fast catching up is getting both highlights as well as lowlights done in your hair. To get the perfect look, highlights are added on top of the hair while lowlights are added below the hair. The lowlights give depth to the hair and at the same time, highlights make them look highly dramatic. A combination of lowlights and highlights enhances the overall hair color like none! This hair highlighting technique, popularly known as "Tri-color Service" should always be done by a professional. A professional will know exactly how many highlights and lowlights to add to the hair to get the right balance of both. Usually, when it comes to tri-color service, most stylists follow the formula 3:1 i.e. for every three highlights, one lowlight is added.

This was in short about lowlights vs highlights. Here's hoping that the next time you go to a salon to add streaks to your hair, you will know exactly what to opt for to get those glamorous locks! One last tip before I sign off - along with styling and coloring your hair, pay attention to hair care as well, to enhance the natural beauty of your hair!

* Minimize breakage by allowing your hair to air-dry as often as possible.
* Some curly haired women will skip every other shampoo and just use conditioning rinses. Shampoo at least once a week to avoid greasy hair and a build up of products, but if you shampoo too often this will dry our your hair and leave it frizzy.
* Use a moisturizing shampoo to help hydrate the scalp.
* Tip: Comb some conditioner through your hair before shampooing.
* On non-shampooing days, rinse your hair with warm water, apply conditioner and rinse well. This will give you clean hair, without stripping away the protective oils.
* Apply mousse to still-damp hair and spread from roots to end. This will help control frizz.
* Other ways to control frizz - use some leave-in conditioning products, or anti-frizz hair serums.
* DO NOT use a brush on your curly hair. Use a widetoothed comb or your fingers to detangle your curls.
* Always comb the conditioner through your hair when washing it. This will help evenly spread the conditioner from root to end. Detangle your hair before rinsing out the conditioner.
* To control frizzy hair, use an anti-frizz serum to smooth the frizz, add shine and condition your hair. Most serums contain silicone which sits on top of the hair shaft and protects hair from heat.

Tie the middle section with an elastic band (not scrunchy) and separate it with the other 2 sections. This middle section's thickness and width depends entirely on you.
  • A perfect faux hawk haircut looks its best with short hair, but you can get the desired style with medium, shoulder-length hair as well. If you wish to have the short faux hawk haircut, then trim some of the length.
  • Now if you want, you can shave both sides with clippers (this step works for short hair only as you won't be shaving off a lot of extra hair, works best on men). For women, you can use some styling gel and hair spray to sleek back the sides behind the ears to make the style complete.

How to Make Dreadlock Beads 2011

You can beautify your dreadlocks using beads. In case commercially available beads seem a bit too expensive or unnecessary, you may always make your beads on your own! You can add your personal touch and make beads which are to your liking. Some people prefer simpler beads, which ironically are usually never available in stores and the ones you can find are too over the top. This article suggests some ideas on how to make dreadlock beads at home, using simple materials.

Instructions to Make Dreadlock Beads

#1 - Polymer Clay Beads
You can make dreadlock beads using polymer clay. This clay is sold in most art and craft stores. This polymer clay needs to be cooked at 300º Fahrenheit, which is easily possible using the kitchen oven. Here are the instructions:
  • Use a pen or stick with a larger diameter, which according to you matches the radius of your individual dreadlocks. It is always better to let the beads be slightly bigger so, that they can accommodate the hair and not feel too tight.
  • Now use a very flexible wire (aluminum wire or florist wire), and wind it loosely around the pen. The pen must be loose enough to rotate under the wire. Let there be a slight distance between each coil of wire.
  • If you wish to add danglers to the bead, you will need to leave a loop at the tip of the wire.
  • Now wrap the polymer clay on the wire, and while you cover the wire, try to keep rotating the pen gradually. This rotating movement will prevent the clay from sticking to the pen.
  • Gradually detach the wire from the pen and place this bead in the oven. Set the temperature at 149º Celsius or 300º Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.
  • As a suggestion, you could use pre-colored clay, so that you need not have to apply the base paint for each bead. Therefore, if you wish to have a black bead, use black polymer clay.
  • Once the bead has been baked, let it cool down and do not touch it for at least 2 hours, after which you can use polymer clay paint, and decorate the bead anyway you prefer.
#2 - Wire Beads
You can make dreadlock beads using attractive wires and simply wind them into spring shaped beads. Apply the procedure mentioned above and wind the wire over a fat pen. You can thereafter use a cutting-plier to make shapes and designs at the tips of each bead, by making tribal swirls at each end of the bead. All you need to do is to bend the wire inwards. Or you could make rather eccentric designs such as swans and snakes, by bending the wire. Make sure the bead is made first and thereafter the design is made over the bead. If you prefer you may add small glass beads through the metal wire, and make it a part of the dreadlock bead itself. Explore your options wisely, as you can make so many thrilling designs using just plain wire!

#3 - Paper Beads
You may make long colorful paper beads using attractive magazine scraps. All you need to do is to to cut a few pieces of magazine into 8 inch by 4 inch triangles. Make a collection of all the colors you require for your dreadlocks. After which you must tightly wind each triangular piece of paper to a fat pen or stick. When you make the first coil, stick the paper to the inner surface of the sheet using glue. Do not let the paper get stuck to the pen, which is why you must keep rotating the pen. Make sure you wind it in such a way that, it remains loose enough for the the pen to be removed. Now stick the ends of the paper and let it dry, after which, you may slide the pen out. Your paper bead is ready! You can also make round paper beads by simply winding triangular paper sheets over and over again on the same spot of the pen. And keep sticking the sheet onto the new triangular piece of paper, every time you wind.

#4 - Fabric Beads
Making fabric beads follows the same procedure as paper beads. There is no difference except that you will need to use fabric glue and fabric paint in case you wish to decorate your dreadlock beads further. This is a very simple craft idea, which can be completed in minutes!

#5 - Wooden Beads
You may make wooden beads for your dreadlocks as well. For this you may buy a few small cubes of wood and some rectangular ones. These cubes must be big enough to fit your hair, once they are made into beads. Here are the instructions:
  • Measure the diameter of your hair and accordingly make a circular mark, which is half an inch bigger, on the wood.
  • Now you may chisel the edges off and smoothen the sides using sandpaper. This will take some time before an actual oval shaped bead is formed.
  • In case you wish to make a cubical shaped bead, simple cut the extra sides off using a pocket-knife, while ensuring that the cubical shape is still retained.
  • Now drill a hole into the demarcated area, using a drilling size which matches the marking. Be very gently, as excess force may break the bead in two or cause a big ugly crack! Making the hole manually will take too much of your time and it will not be perfect.
  • Now you could make designs on the cube using a fine thin tipped chisel or you could paint it!
Hopefully now your knowledge on how to make dreadlock beads has increased substantially. With practice, you will begin to come up with your own ideas of making the beads look more attractive and long lasting.

How to Make Dreadlocks 2011

Dreadlocks have been a part of many cultures around the world. Though in the western world its popularity spread through the Rastafarian movement. It is often seen as a rebellious portrayal of a political point of view that refutes the idea of war and violence. Instead it goes out for seeking 'Jah'. That being said, today this hairstyle has become more of a fashion statement as well as a way of self expression. Dreads may look unkempt and dirty to many, but the fact is that they need a lot of maintenance and care. They need to be cleaned at least twice a week so as to cleanse the scalp and to ensure that fiber or other particles do not get stuck in the maze of hair. For those who go in for dreadlocks, be sure to take good care of them once they are made. For a fact, dreadlocks have been known to fall off if they get too dry or are ill maintained.

How to Make Dreadlocks Fast

The following is a tried and tested method on getting dreadlocks :

The Back Sweep Method
Also called the back combing method, it literally means to comb the hair in the opposite direction towards the scalp, so that the hair gets frizzier along the way. Here are the steps you would need to follow if you are making your own dreads. Though it would be reasonable to request a friend to assist you in this seemingly easy but rather exhausting task. If you do it alone there is a high possibility that the dreads on the back of your head will be ill formed. Follow these instructions step by step:
  • Do not condition your hair for at least 7-10 days before the day you intend to get your dreadlocks done. This will ensure that your hair has lesser moisture or oiliness.
  • Wash your hair with a non residue shampoo and then allow it to air dry.
  • Once your hair is dry, part your hair into small sections, take as much hair as you would like, depending on how thick you wish your dreads to be. They will get fluffier over time, so be careful not to take too much hair per dread.
  • Now take one section at a time, while you secure the rest of the free hair with a rubber band.
  • Take the section and twist it real tight, or simply roll the section over your finger. Always tie the ends of the hair with a rubber band. Now slowly begin to comb your hair backwards towards your scalp from the tip of the hair.
  • Now apply some dreadlocks wax or bee wax all over the section, this will ensure that the hair retains its twists.
  • You will need to twist the section once more while massaging the wax into the hair section. Then secure the rubber band again.
  • Avoid dread waxes which have petroleum in them, as they are meant to help give shine to already time tested dreads. Petroleum, causes new dreads to loosen out.
  • Repeat this process with the rest of the hair sections. The entire procedure will take about 4 hours or so to complete, if you have shoulder length or longer hair.
Of course you could get neater dreads if you get them done from a professional. The fact being that this hairstyle unlike others is more permanent in nature. Therefore would it not be safer to seek professional help? They would be able to give unique designs on the scalp, while twisting the dreads with perfection. None the less if you do choose to dread your own hair, you need to make sure that your hair is long enough to be twisted even if they are relatively short. Hair that reaches till your nose would do just fine, and can be made into dreads easily. Though you will need to learn all about how to maintain dreadlocks properly. Apple cider vinegar mixed in water works great in cleansing the scalp and keeping the dreads dust free. Also once your dreads are made, try not to wash your hair for another 10 days or so. If you can't stand the grime or feel it's getting too dirty, use a cotton swap or a sponge dipped in apple cider vinegar so as to clean the hair.

The back sweep combined with the twisting method works the best for making dreads at home, since it makes the job relatively easier. Your dreads will take a month or more to completely form, and you will need to wax them every time you begin to see loose strands or your twists begin to loosen out. Hopefully now you know how to make dreadlocks on your own.

How to Remove Dreadlocks 2011

Dreadlocks are meant to beautify a person's looks, however, after a point of time, people having dreadlocks get bored of it and they want to remove the dreadlocks. How to remove is many people's doubt as many of them are unaware of the actual procedure of removal of dreadlocks. "How to get rid of dreadlocks" will no more be your query after going through this article.

According to many people the only way to remove dreadlocks is by cutting them. But, it is not true there exists other method too. Below I have cited both the methods. The first one is cutting off dreadlocks completely while the second is picking the dreadlocks. Lets take a look at them one by one.

The materials you will require for removing the dreadlocks are hair clippers, scissors, conditioner, metal comb and de-greasing shampoo.

Method 1: Cutting Dreadlocks Off

With the help of scissors, cut off your dreadlocks. Make sure you cut them near the scalp right at the root. Cutting it off completely will help you so that you do not have to pick any hair. In order to shave your head, you can make use of clippers. These clippers will help you to remove the remaining fragments of the dreadlocks. For having an even cut, you can also make use of these clippers. With a de-greasing shampoo, wash your scalp thoroughly. If there is any wax or grease present under the dreadlocks, then you can get rid of it by washing your hair thoroughly. With this step, you will successfully complete the procedure of removing the dreadlocks. How to take out dreadlocks easily can be simply answered once the procedure has been followed.

Method 2: Picking Dreadlocks

Before you start with the actual process of removing the dreadlocks, soak them in hot water for 10 minutes. Make sure that the water is hot and not warm. Hot water heat will help in getting rid of grease which is present inside or below the dreadlocks. With a good shampoo, wash the dreadlocks thoroughly. Apply the shampoo to the dreadlocks and massage from top to the bottom. At the center of the dreadlocks, massage the shampoo so that if there is any debris present in the center, it will also be cleaned. Rinse the dreadlocks well and make sure that water reaches each dread and also take care that after washing the dreadlocks, there is no shampoo present inside the dreadlocks. Conditioner should be applied to each of the dreadlocks. After washing properly, apply conditioner and comb your hair.

First, comb the bottom of the dreadlocks and then move upwards. Lots of time will be required for combing. But, it is worth it as you will not have to cut your hair for getting rid of the dreadlocks. After you have combed all the dreadlocks well, again apply conditioner. Allow the conditioner to be on the scalp for five minutes. This will help in repairing the damage which is caused while combing the hair. According to me this is a better method as you will not have to cut the dreadlocks. The only drawback of this method is, it is time consuming.

Apart from the above mentioned methods, you can also try different products which are specially designed for the removal of dreadlocks. How to remove is no more your doubt I guess. But I personally think dreadlocks just look amazing and should not be removed. If you do not know how to style them, then read dreadlock styles for women and dreadlock styles for men.

How to Maintain Dreadlocks
  • Wash the dreadlocks at least once a week. Use a residue-free shampoo for washing. You may need to wash your dreadlocks more frequently if you sweat a lot on your head.
  • An alternative to cleaning dreadlocks with shampoo is to use a mixture of apple cider and water in the ratio of 1:3. This is a natural and excellent cleanser and the best answer to the question 'Dreadlocks - how to wash it naturally?'.
  • Twist the dreadlocks right after taking a shower, i.e. when your hair is wet. This will ensure a longer life of the dreadlocks.
  • Massage your scalp twice a day. It will maintain proper circulation of blood. This will, in turn, help in releasing natural oils in the scalp, preventing dryness and natural breakage of dreadlocks.
  • Massaging will also tone up your scalp. This will decrease or completely eliminate the need for using conditioners and other hair care products on dreadlocks.
  • In case your dreadlocks look frizzy and brittle, you will have to apply conditioner on them for preventing breakage. If you wish, you can apply the conditioner only on the dreadlocks.
  • Try to use chemicals as low as possible because it will attract dirt, dust and other chemicals and will eventually lead to dreadlocks damage. The best idea will be to use hair care products especially made for dreadlocks.
  • Whenever you use shampoos or conditioners on your dreadlocks, rinse them completely. Dreadlocks act like sponges and absorb chemicals. Rinsing them well with water will remove any chemical trapped in them. This is very necessary for good and long-term health of your hair.
  • Check for the fabric on which you sleep. By sleeping on fabrics like cotton or flannel, you may damage your hair over time as they cause the dreadlocks to pull against them while sleeping.
  • The fabrics that are considered to be the best for maintaining dreadlocks are silk and satin. However, if you have to use cotton bed sheets then wrap your dreadlocks with silk scarf while you sleep. More on dreadlocks head wraps.
  • You will often find build-ups in your dreadlocks. They are suitable for microbial growth. This may give rise to infection on your scalp. An ideal option to prevent microbial infection on scalp is to sterilize it with an antiseptic agent on a regular basis.
All the above mentioned tips on 'Dreadlocks - how to maintain?' are quite simple but the secret in this particular case lies in practicing them regularly for a long time. Hence, make all these tips for dreadlocks maintenance a part of your lifestyle and keep turning heads towards you.

How to Prevent Greasy Hair 2011

Greasy hair is the term used to denote flat, limp hair that clumps together with a stringy appearance, even after washing with shampoo. It may appear as if you have not washed the hair for long. Such hair may also look dull, lifeless and unclean. If you identify with this problem, you may go through this article for some solutions about how to prevent greasy hair.

Why Hair Gets Greasy

As in case of skin, even hair can be classified as oily and dry. While, dry and brittle hair has its own share of problems, greasy hair too is not so great, as far as hair styling is concerned. Why do some people have greasy hair? It is because of their overactive sebaceous glands that produce the oily sebum in large amounts. It is this sebum that makes the hair oily and greasy. Such hair attracts dust and may get dull and limp too.
