Glee takes the Big Apple by storm, and what better place for a high-energy song-and-dance number than NYC’s iconic Central Park? Word has it the episode features a mashup of Madonna’s “I Love New York” and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”
Did anyone else have Glee’s cover of “Empire State of Mind” running through their heads during last night’s Season 2 finale? Guess this is one of those Oprah-coined “full circle moments” that Chris Colfer (Kurt) mentioned. In the first episode of the season, New Directions performed Jay-Z’s ode-to-the-big-apple in the McKinley High courtyard. Fast-forward 21 episodes later, and the glee club finds themselves in the city of love that never sleeps for Nationals — so it’s only appropriate that they pay proper tribute. Although we’re still partial to the aforementioned season-opening tune, their “I Love New York/New York, New York” mashup was pretty darn entertaining.
Moving on... We love a good Brittany-penned nonsensical ditty as much as the next Gleek (“Fondue for Two” and last night’s “My Cup” — instant classics), and we also don't mind when intra-glee club bonding leads to moments like the guys serenading Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) on the street with “Bella Notte.” Another favorite? Rachel and Kurt’s “wicked” and, yes, over-the-top Gershwin Theatre break-in-turned-duet.
All of that became a blur, however, when Rachel and Finn poured their hearts out on the Nationals stage while singing the Glee original “Pretending.” The next original, “Light Up the World,” didn't meet the level of kick-a**-ness as their Regionals jam “Loser Like Me,” but we may have been too distracted by that kiss to judge accurately.
What do YOU think? Did the Season 2 finale pack the musical punch you had hoped for? And did anyone else forget Mr. Schue’s (Matthew Morrison) “Still Got Tonight” performance as soon as it was over? Yikes.
